The best antivirus family plan is not simply the product with the highest device count. A useful family plan must match the number of people, the devices children actually use, the browser used for filtering, and the adult who will manage renewals.
For a larger mixed-device household, Bitdefender Total Security Family is the best overall fit. Norton 360 Deluxe makes more sense for up to five devices when the family also wants an unlimited VPN. A Windows-only household can start with Microsoft Defender and Family Safety for free.

Bitdefender Total Security Family
Check current priceBest for
Larger households with several people and many Windows, Mac, Android, or iOS devices.
Why it fits
The current family plan supports five accounts and up to 25 devices, with family roles, parental controls, password management, and central administration.
Watch out
The vendor page separates first-term and renewal pricing, but dynamic pricing must be verified at checkout. Platform features are not identical.
Norton 360 Deluxe
See pricingBest for
Families with up to five devices that want parental controls and an unlimited VPN in one subscription.
Why it fits
Norton's U.S. plan includes five-device security, Parental Control, VPN, Dark Web Monitoring, and 50GB PC cloud backup.
Watch out
The current U.S. page lists $49.99 for the first year and $124.99 at renewal. Auto-renewal and platform limitations need active management.
Microsoft Defender + Family Safety
Best for
Windows-first families that want a free baseline and are willing to use Microsoft accounts and Edge for web filtering.
Why it fits
Defender is built into Windows. Family Safety adds screen time, app and game controls, purchase permissions, and content filtering.
Watch out
Web and search filters currently require Microsoft Edge. It is not one cross-platform antivirus subscription for every device.
ESET HOME Security Essential
See pricingBest for
Windows-heavy households that value a light system footprint and need a smaller, configurable plan.
Why it fits
ESET lists parental controls on Windows, centralized ESET HOME management, and support across Windows, macOS, and Android.
Watch out
ESET says it does not provide antivirus for iOS. Verify device count, plan tier, first-term price, and renewal terms at checkout.

Why Bitdefender is the best overall family fit
Bitdefender changed the family-plan comparison by moving beyond a single shared account. Its current U.S. family lineup supports a Family Manager, adult members, teenagers, and children across five accounts and up to 25 devices.
That structure matters in a household where adults want privacy while parents still need controls for younger users. Bitdefender lists internet-time limits, content filtering, location features, and activity reports in Parental Control.
The buying friction is pricing clarity. The product page uses dynamic pricing and says subscriptions renew at the applicable renewal price. Treat the checkout page as the source of truth and save a copy of the terms.

Check current priceWhy Norton 360 Deluxe is the best five-device bundle
Norton 360 Deluxe is no longer a “VPN but no parental controls” recommendation. Norton’s current U.S. page explicitly includes Parental Control, five-device security, VPN, Dark Web Monitoring, and 50GB cloud backup.
That makes Norton the strongest compact bundle here. It also has the clearest pricing warning: the current U.S. page shows $49.99 for the first year and $124.99 at renewal. Families that will not monitor auto-renewal should choose a simpler setup.

Introductory pricing can be meaningfully different from the price you pay after the first term. Verify the renewal terms before checkout.
First term
$49.99
Often the advertised price. Confirm device count, term length, and included features.
Renewal
$124.99
This is the number that matters if auto-renewal stays enabled after year one.
Before you buy

When the free Microsoft option is enough
Microsoft Defender plus Family Safety can be enough for a Windows-first household with careful browsing habits. Family organizers can manage screen time, app and game limits, purchase permissions, and activity reporting.
The limitation is easy to miss: Microsoft says web and search filters work only with Edge while family members are signed into their Microsoft accounts. If children use Chrome or Firefox, the free option does not provide the same browser-wide filtering parents may expect.

Where ESET fits
ESET HOME Security Essential is the smaller-plan alternative for Windows-heavy families. ESET currently lists Parental Control for Windows and Windows ARM, plus ESET HOME management, firewall, network inspection, and a small system footprint.
The cross-platform caveat matters. ESET supports security products on macOS and Android, but its U.S. page says it does not provide antivirus for iOS. That makes it less complete for an iPhone-heavy household than the device count alone suggests.

Features that sound similar but are not
Marketing vs usefulness
Family security reality check
A plan can include the feature name without delivering the same coverage on every device.
Parental controls
Sounds useful because
One dashboard should control screen time, sites, and apps everywhere.
Reality check
Supported features vary by Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, browser, and child-device type.
GuardPick take
Check the exact child's device and browser before buying.
25-device coverage
Sounds useful because
A large number appears future-proof.
Reality check
Device count is useful only if family roles, supported platforms, and the manager dashboard fit the household.
GuardPick take
Bitdefender's five-account structure matters more than the headline number alone.
Included VPN
Sounds useful because
One subscription can protect browsing on public Wi-Fi.
Reality check
VPN limits differ by plan. Norton includes VPN in Deluxe; Bitdefender's unlimited VPN is in higher family tiers.
GuardPick take
Do not upgrade the whole antivirus plan for a VPN nobody will use.
Activity reporting
Sounds useful because
Parents can see how devices are used.
Reality check
Reporting depends on accounts, permissions, connected devices, and supported apps or browsers.
GuardPick take
Use controls transparently and give teenagers age-appropriate privacy.

Recommended choice
Norton 360 Deluxe

Older Windows PCs and a smaller household

ESET combines Windows parental controls with a smaller footprint and flexible device counts.
Avoid / watch out
No iOS antivirus. Confirm which controls work on every family device.
How GuardPick evaluates family plans
Editorial method
How these family picks were checked
GuardPick compared current official plan pages, platform limits, parental-control documentation, independent antivirus test context, and renewal friction. We did not run an in-house malware test or monitor a child's device.
- 01
Household fit
People, accounts, devices, browsers, and the adult managing the subscription come before the headline device count.
- 02
Platform limits
A feature is counted only where the vendor documents support for the relevant operating system or browser.
- 03
Renewal clarity
First-term discounts do not erase the annual renewal cost or auto-renewal responsibility.
- 04
Free baseline
Microsoft Defender and Family Safety remain valid when a paid suite does not solve a real household problem.
