The “includes VPN” claim in antivirus marketing needs a second look. There is a significant difference between:
- A VPN capped at 200MB per day, such as Bitdefender Total Security’s included allowance, enough for a short browsing session
- An unlimited VPN inside a traditional antivirus suite, such as Norton 360 Deluxe
- A VPN-first security bundle, such as NordVPN Complete, paired with Microsoft Defender, ESET, or another separate antivirus baseline
Most antivirus bundles are in the first category. Norton is the main traditional-suite exception. NordVPN is a different lane: not my first answer for full antivirus replacement, but a strong fit when the VPN itself is the product you actually need.

When a bundled VPN is enough
The 200MB/day Bitdefender cap is sufficient for:
- Checking email on a hotel Wi-Fi network (brief, low data)
- Quick banking or login on a public network
- IP masking for a single short browsing session
It is not sufficient for:
- Watching a Netflix episode (a 45-minute episode at standard quality uses 1GB+)
- Working remotely all day through a VPN connection
- Torrenting or downloading large files
- Streaming music services over a full day
If your use case is public Wi-Fi protection for brief sessions, the Bitdefender cap may be workable. If VPN is a daily tool, it is not.

Where NordVPN Complete fits
NordVPN is not the same buying decision as Norton or Bitdefender. Norton is a traditional antivirus suite that includes an unlimited VPN. NordVPN Complete is a VPN-first subscription that adds anti-malware and browsing protection, ad and tracker blocking, and malicious-download checks.
That makes it useful in a different situation: you are happy with Microsoft Defender, ESET, or another antivirus baseline, but you want a stronger VPN than the small VPN bundled into many antivirus plans.
The important caveat: do not treat NordVPN Complete as a one-to-one replacement for a full traditional antivirus suite on a high-risk Windows PC. NordVPN itself describes its next-gen antivirus as focusing on scams, phishing, malicious sites, trackers, ads, and download protection. Traditional antivirus focuses more on local files, processes, and device-level monitoring. Those are related, but not identical.
