Core malware detection at the budget tier is often as good as premium. The independent lab scores for entry-level Bitdefender are nearly identical to their premium products. What you give up is the extras:

ESET NOD32: Most honest pricing at the budget tier
ESET NOD32 is the entry-level ESET product: antivirus without the extra internet security features. It covers Windows, Mac, and Linux, earns consistently strong AV-Comparatives scores, and runs lighter than most alternatives.
The key advantage over Bitdefender Plus in the budget category: the renewal price is closer to the first-year price. Less of a billing shock in year two.

What to avoid at the budget tier
TotalAV: First-year pricing looks appealing, but the billing and auto-renewal complaints are well-documented. Renewal price jumps significantly. Cancellation reported as difficult. For budget buyers who won’t monitor their subscription carefully, this creates real financial risk.
Free antivirus with credit card required: Legitimate free antivirus (Defender, Bitdefender Free, Malwarebytes Free) doesn’t ask for payment information. If a “free” antivirus requires a credit card, it’s a trial that will auto-convert to paid.
Unknown brands with extreme discounts: A handful of antivirus products appear regularly in paid search results with very low pricing and no history of independent lab testing. Without AV-TEST or AV-Comparatives results, there’s no way to verify the protection is real.
